Description

As an e-discovery professional, it is necessary to understand hardware, devices and related components. Because evidence is stored on devices, this domain focuses on civil and criminal case law for handling, preserving and collecting digital components, devices and media. This domain further provides an overview of different hardware devices, preservation and collection considerations for these devices, and their discoverable aspects.

Electronic evidence can be stored on many different types of devices.  Preservation and collection of this evidence is highly dependant on the type of media within the device.  For example, evidence stored on a laptop computer has certain protocols and tools that are used to extract and gather information from the hard drive.  There are different protocols and tools that need to be considered when collecting evidence from cellular phone memory or a SIM card.  The content of this domain is broken down into three categories - a background that defines terminology and describes devices and media, discoverable aspects and considerations of the media, and case law relevant to the domain.
